On a square grid, plants per row = bed length ÷ spacing (rounded down) and rows = bed width ÷ spacing — multiply for the total. Triangular (offset) planting staggers alternate rows and pulls them closer together (spacing × 0.866), fitting roughly 15% more plants at identical plant-to-plant distance — the reason orchards and intensive beds stagger. Spacing is always center-to-center, which is also exactly what seed packets and nursery tags mean.

What Is Plant Spacing?

Spacing is the gardener's oldest tradeoff: too tight and plants compete for light, water, and airflow (hello, powdery mildew); too loose and the bed wastes weed-friendly bare soil. Once you've settled a spacing, the immediate question is purely arithmetic — how many transplants to raise or buy for the bed you actually have.

How to Calculate Plant Spacing: Square vs Triangular

Same spacing, two geometries:

Square: plants = ⌊L ÷ s⌋ × ⌊W ÷ s⌋ Triangular: row gap = s × 0.866, alternate rows offset by s/2 → ≈ 15% more plants in the same bed

Worked example: an 8 × 4 ft bed at 12″ spacing fits 32 plants in square rows (8 × 4), or 38 triangular — five offset rows alternating 8 and 7. The plant-to-plant distance is identical; the packing is just smarter.

These densities assume good soil and irrigation — intensive spacing feeds and waters more per square foot precisely because the roots share it.

How to Read Spacing on a Seed Packet

Seed packets give two numbers — in-row spacing and between-row spacing (say, 4″ apart in rows 18″ apart). The wide row gap exists for walking and hoeing in field-style gardens; raised beds you never step in can use the tighter equal-grid spacing this calculator models, which is the entire premise of intensive and square-foot methods.

Tags mean mature size: an 18″ spacing on a tomato seedling looks absurd in May and correct in July. Crowding shows up late as disease pressure and small yields, so when torn between two spacings, the wider one usually wins — or split the difference with the triangular pattern, which buys density without cutting plant-to-plant distance.

What does triangular or staggered spacing do?

Alternate rows shift by half a spacing and squeeze to 0.866 × spacing apart, packing ~15% more plants while keeping every plant the same distance from its neighbors. It's the standard trick of orchards, ground covers, and intensive vegetable beds.

Is plant spacing measured from the edges or centers?

Center to center — stem to stem. A 12″ spacing means the stems stand a foot apart, not a foot of clear air between leaves. Seed packets, nursery tags, and this calculator all use the center convention.

Can I ignore the row-spacing number on seed packets?

In raised beds you don't walk in, largely yes — the wide row gap is for field access, not plant biology. Use the in-row figure as an equal grid. In traditional walk-through gardens, keep real paths; your knees and your hoe need them.

What happens if I plant too close?

Competition and stagnant air: leggier growth, smaller yields, and much friendlier conditions for fungal disease. Crowding costs show up mid-season when thinning feels cruelest — which is why doing the spacing math before planting beats fixing it after.

How much extra should I buy or sow?

A practical 10–15% over the calculated count covers transplant losses, weak seedlings, and the odd cutworm. Direct-sown crops handle it differently — sow generously and thin to the target spacing, using the thinnings as salad where the crop allows.
